Hiking to Pouakai Tarn is an enriching bush walk with unbelievable views of the volcano perfectly mirrored in the tarn, a kind of circular lake. This one is reasonably flat and easy in the spectrum of hikes, with a boardwalk to keep you out of the mud. It took us around two hours one way, and you can stay in the hut overnight or take a tent — it’s the most magical campsite we’ve ever been to.”

“Seoraksan National Park is home to the best hiking in South Korea. That’s saying a lot: a whopping 70% of this country is mountainous, so there’s plenty of opportunity for getting out in nature. My favorite hike is the Ulsanbawi Rock Trail. This five-mile (8 km) return route takes you up to a breathtaking viewpoint, 3,000 feet (910 m) above sea level. It starts gently, but the finale 1,000-step staircase and the entire hike will take around three hours. I promise the views across the valleys and turquoise rivers are worth it.”
